Since there are no direct commercial flights to Antarctica travelers must first reach a gateway city in South America, from where you can embark on a cruise or take a flight to the White Continent.

  • By Air: Your journey begins with a flight from India to one of the major gateway cities in South America.
  • Popular Gateway Cities 1. Punta Arenas, Chile (for direct flights or cruises to Antarctica)2. Ushuaia, Argentina (for cruises departing to the Antarctica Peninsula)3. Buenos Aires, Argentina (to connect to Ushuaia)

            Flight Routes:

  • India to Buenos Aires: You can prefer this route with airlines like Emirates, Qatar, and Lufthansa, with common layovers in Dubai, Doha, Frankfurt, or London. It takes approximately 20-25 hours, including layovers.
  • India to Santiago(Chile): You can prefer this route with LATAM Airlines or Emirates with layovers like Dubai, Doha, or Sao Paulo which takes approximately 25-30 hours.
  • Domestic flights from Buenos Aires or Santiago to cities like Ushuaia or Punta Arenas are operated by LATAM Airlines, Aerolineas Argentinas, or Sky Airlines.

          Once you’ve reached the gateway city, there are     two primary ways to travel to Antarctica:

  1. Expedition Cruises: Most cruises to Antarctica depart from Ushuaia, known as the “Gateway to Antarctica”. You cross the Drake Passage and it takes 8-12 days (depending on the itinerary)
  1. Direct flights to Antarctica: These flights depart from Punta Arenas to Union Glacier Camp or King George Island which are operated by companies like Antarctica Logistics & Expeditions and DAP Airlines.

 2. Local Transport

      Once landed, most exploration is done on foot under the guidance of experts. However, the primary transport for moving between points of interest on the Antarctic coastline is Icebreaker and Expedition ships, Polar Vehicles, and Zodiac Boats.
